SUMMARY:HRE at HB - Part 1
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will review the history of functional analysis
of problem behavior through the years. Special attention will be paid to
how these adaptations and advancements informed the Practical Functional A
ssessment (PFA) approach\, which is embraced by many clinicians at Hopebri
dge and beyond.\n\nSee details of Part 2: HRE at HB\n\nSpeaker:\nJana Sarn
 o (She/Her) \,Chief Clinical Officer at Hopebridge\, BCBA\, - Doctoral Can
didate\nJana Sarno is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with exten
sive educational\, clinical\, and professional development experience in t
he field of Applied Behavior Analysis. She earned her Bachelor of Science
from Western Michigan University (WMU). Following graduation from WMU\, Ja
na attended The University of Southern Mississippi\, for her PhD.\, in sch
ool psychology. During her time at USM\, she worked with children enrolled
  in Head Start/Early Head Start\, local school districts\, a multi-discipl
inary setting for children with communication and developmental disorders\
, and the USM School Psychology Clinic.\n\nAfter her time at USM\, Jana co
mpleted a year-long internship at the Marcus Autism Center\, a NIH Autism
Center of Excellence in Atlanta\, GA. While at Marcus\, Jana received inte
nsive clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of severe proble
m behavior\, verbal behavior\, and feeding disorders. Jana has held clinic
al leadership positions at several in-home\, school\, and clinic-based ABA
organizations. Along with her work at Hopebridge and AIM Clinics\, Jana v
olunteers on the Board of Directors for the Illinois Association for Behav
ior Analysis (ILABA). In her work with ILABA\, Jana chairs the Legislative
Affairs Committee that focuses on governmental relationships\, grassroots
advocacy\, and increasing access to ABA through legislative change.\n\nTa
ylor Thomas\, Regional BCBA at Hopebridge\, MA\, BCBA\nI have never known
a life without autism.  My older brother is autistic and one of my earlie
st memories was finding an activity that was mutually enjoyable (the swing
). From my perspective\, I needed to change the way I approached him in or
der to build a relationship- little did I know this would shape my career
and lifelong passions.  I stumbled upon ABA at the recommendation of a pr
ofessor while looking for a meaningful career\; the graduate program and j
ob description had me at "autism". Over the last nine years at Hopebridge\
, I have had nearly every role within the ABA department and am now happy
to serve as the Regional BCBA in Florida. My passion is to apply the "lear
n by listening" approach to as many service providers as possible to suppo
rt our mission of access to quality care and the opportunity to live "the
best life possible".\nNOTE - INTERNAL TRAINING:\nThis training is for Hope
bridge employees only. Registration for this event must be done with a Hop

SUMMARY:Parent Training Interventions
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: 1\n\nParents and caregivers play a key role in the succes
s of ABA therapy. Their involvement and active participation in the genera
lization and development of their child’s program are critically importa
nt. At the same time\, parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (
ASD) often experience a great deal of stress and an overwhelming number of
responsibilities and needs associated with their child’s diagnosis\, wh
ich can impact their participation and active engagement. As Board Certifi
ed Behavior Analysts (BCBAs)\, we can support our clients and their famili
es by using evidence-based interventions. This panel will provide a compar
ison of evidence-based interventions (Research Units Behavioral Interventi
on (RUBI)\, Project ImPACT\, and Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT))
that can be utilized in conjunction with parent training to provide compre
hensive support to families and increase effective parent engagement. The
panelists will begin by reviewing relevant research\, highlighting how dif
ferent evidence-based parent training methods can be applied to fit each f
amily’s needs and optimize skill acquisition. Case examples will be pres
ented\, allowing the panelists to review and compare clinical experiences
and outcomes of evidence-based parent training methods. The remaining time
will be used to answer questions from the audience to promote further dis
cussion on the importance of providing comprehensive parent training and s
 upport.\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:PLAY-SAY: Assent & Speech with Play Chains
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: 1\n\nIncreased emphasis on client assent refocuses the i
mportance of naturalistic developmental behavioral intervention (NDBI) to
improve the value of social stimuli and shape indicating responses. Defini
ng and measuring indicating responses (e.g.\, eye gaze\, approach\, gestur
e\, vocalization) to identify ”likes” (declarations of establishing op
erations)\, “dislikes” (declarations of abative operations) and withdr
awal of assent provides opportunities to honor The Ethics Code for Behavio
r Analysts and shape agency in children with autism. Indicating responses
provide opportunities to teach functional and formal communication to make
choices\, indicate assent\, and calmly and clearly indicate assent withdr
awal. Improving the frequency and variety of Indicating responses is also
correlated with improved language outcomes (Topping\, et al. 2013)\, learn
 er cooperation (Shillingsburg\, Bowen &amp\; Shapiro\, 2014\; Shillingsbur
g\, Hansen &amp\; Wright\, 2019)\, and has been correlated with social beh
avioral cusps and better learner outcomes (Harms &amp\; Greer\, 2020). Ins
truction can be challenging when confronted with individuals with limited
attending to others and restricted reinforcer pools. A view of early socia
l\, play\, and communicative milestones through developmental and behavior
al lenses allows the operationalization of methods to create play chains v
ia four different categories of play. Pausing or adding novelty to the pla
y chains provides opportunities to reinforce and shape early non-verbal co
mmunication\, promote attending and responding to instructor social stimul
i\, condition ongoing social interaction as a reinforcer\, and shape verba
l behavior. Learn to scale and sequence training for successful staff impl
ementation and client improvement. Outcome data from a pilot project which
demonstrates improvement in learning opportunities after training impleme
 ntation will also be presented.\n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Training Caregivers to Teach Critical Social Skills with their own
 Infants and Young Children
DESCRIPTION:CEUs: 3\n\nThis workshop will cover the early infant learning o
f key social skills using an operant learning paradigm. An emphasis will b
e placed on behavior analytic caregiver training procedures to increase cr
itical social skills such as vocal imitation\, eye contact\, joint attenti
on skills\, and social referencing. We will examine previous research\, di
scuss present ongoing research\, and provide future directions. Procedures
  such as synchronized reinforcement\, contingent reinforcement\, shaping\,
environmental arrangement\, and more will be discussed as they pertain to
infants and young children. We will first describe experimental illustrat
ions of how operant methodologies and social reinforcement are essential t
o understanding infant social-learning phenomena. Then we will offer behav
ioral procedures and interventions that have advanced our research with in
fants at an increased likelihood of developing autism and other developmen

tics that can be quick and effective for behavior analysts conducting inte

SUMMARY:Why Using ABA and OBM to Effectively Coach Employees Helps Decrease
  Burn Out and Turnover
DESCRIPTION:Event Description\nIn a company that provides Applied Behavior
Analytic (ABA) services\, delivery of high-quality treatment to clients sh
ould be the terminal and utmost goal. However\, companies also need delive
r effective intervention to the clinicians who are delivering that treatme
nt to its clients. In a fast-paced environment with ever-changing policies
and standards\, it’s easy for staff to burn out. Without proper trainin
g\, employee incentives\, leadership opportunities\, and opportunities to
refine skills through continued education\, high turnover is likely\, and
individuals who receive and depend on behavior consultation and services w
 ill ultimately suffer. According to Reed\, Hirst\, and Howard (2013)\, a c
ritical feature of evidence-based Organizational Behavior Management (OBM)
practice is full implementation of empirically-validated interventions. I
n this presentation\, panelists will briefly describe research-based strat
egies for selecting staff for leadership opportunities\, developing and ev
aluating staff training programs for implementation of evidence-based trea
tment\, and implementing effective coaching models and follow-up technique
s and answer audience questions related to these topics.\n\nCEUs: 1.5 CE (

SUMMARY:Adult and Pediatric Voice Disorders - Summit Professional Education
DESCRIPTION:Course Description\n\nA voice disorder occurs when voice qualit
y\, pitch\, and loudness differ or are inappropriate for an individual age
\, gender\, cultural background\, or geographic location. A voice disorder
is present when an individual expresses concern about having an abnormal
voice that does not meet daily needs even if others do not perceive it as
different (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association). Voice disorders
 are estimated to be present in between 3% and 9% of the U.S. population\;
with a reported prevalence in the pediatric population of 2% to 6%. Speech
-language pathologists are trained to evaluate voice use and function to d
etermine the possible cause of the reported and observed symptoms\, and to
determine the best intervention methods for improving voice production.\n
\nVoice disorders occur in both pediatric and adult populations and can be
categorized as structural\, neurogenic\, or functional. Voice quality can
also be affected when psychological stress leads to habitual vocal proble
ms\; these voice disorders are referred to as psychogenic voice disorders.
Voice disorders are not mutually exclusive\, and overlap is common. For e
xample\, while vocal nodules are an issue with the structure of the vocal
mechanism\, they result from behavioral voice misuse (a functional issue).
Speech- language pathologists play a key role in the assessment\, diagnos
is\, treatment\, and management of voice disorders. The SLP’s profession
al roles and responsibilities include diagnostic assessment services\, tre
 atment\, prevention and advocacy\, and patient/family education.\n\nCE Cre

SUMMARY:Caring About the Caregiver: Ethics of Effective Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Event Description\n\nThe Practice Guidelines for Healthcare Fun
ders and Managers (CASP\, 2020) categorizes caregiver consultation as a cr
itical feature of treatment. However\, across the industry\, caregiver con
sultation is rarely prioritized and when it is\, the quality of this suppo
rt is highly variable. Drawing on collective experiences\, working with an
d for healthcare funders\, the presenters will share common mistakes and m
issteps made by analysts when conceptualizing caregiver support. Our goal
of this presentation is to establish a higher standard of care for clients
by presenting proven practices\, as well as a model of consultation\, whi
ch we believe will lead to an increase in caregiver engagement. Tying ethi
cs into the discussion\, an additional aim of this presentation is to prov

SUMMARY:The ABA Supervision Handbook: A Guide to Quality Fieldwork Experien
 ce
DESCRIPTION:CE Credits: 2 CE (2 SUP)\n\nEvent Description\n\nIt is the resp
onsibility of every ABA supervisor to provide efficacious supervision to c
urrent and prospective certificants (BACB\, 2014). The ABA Supervision Han
dbook offers a systematic method for training professional behavior analys
ts to acquire clinical competency. In addition\, it provides a means to ev
aluate ongoing supervisee performance of the skills listed within the 5th
edition task list. In doing so\, The ABA Supervision Handbook allows for t
he identification of supervisees’ mastered skills and areas of improveme
nt\, helps to structure the supervision experience and operationalize the
 practice of supervision\, provides competency-based measures\, and helps f
ulfill the supervisor's duty to develop ethical and data-based decision-ma
 king systems (4.06\; BACB\, 2020). As a result\, organizations and individ
uals will benefit from improved supervisory practices and training compete
nt\, ethical practitioners. This workshop will therefore focus on teaching
participants how to use the Handbook to structure\, train\, and evaluate
supervisees’ experiences\, including the presentation of scenarios to pr
actice using the competency and ethical decision-making instruments.\n\n
Participants will learn to assess the supervisee’s baseline skills\n Pa
