Leadership skills are integral to how Behavior Analysts interact with their supervisees, clients, caregivers, and other professionals. Training for supervisors and consultants in the field of Behavior Analysis has historically leaned towards technical skills centering assessment, intervention, and program monitoring. Recent scholarly work has indicated that failing to develop so called “soft skills” related to developing healthy interpersonal relationships can have a detrimental impact on client outcomes, caregiver relationships, and supervisory practices. Research suggests that interpersonal leadership skills such as compassion are correlated with positive outcomes for clients and caregivers and adherence to treatment. In this talk we will highlight five critical values (skills self-reflection, humility, courage, compassion, and integrity) for leaders that will drive the development of important and often overlooked repertoires. We will explore how a values-based approach to leadership and cultivating leadership practices aligned with these five critical values will support high quality supervision and better client outcomes.
