Special Friends Club | Hopebridge

Hopebridge is happy to partner with Notre Dame University and St. Mary’s College to support the autism community with the Special Friends Club

The Special Friends Club of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s serves to pair university students with children in the greater South Bend community affected by autism spectrum disorders. While most group activities are catered to children, teenagers and young adults are welcome to join the club.

Each Special Friends pair meets once a week with the goal of fostering unique friendships through one-on-one mentorships. In addition to weekly “hang-outs,” the entire club meets about once a month for a Club Party, for games, crafts, pizza, and fun!

Student and family pairs coordinate a mutually convenient time and place to meet each week. Club Parties take place on Notre Dame’s campus about once a month, typically on Sunday afternoons.

The mission of the Special Friends Club is twofold: 1) to create greater awareness of autism and its impact on the local community and the nation; and 2) to enhance and improve the social interaction and communication skills in the children we serve.
