Multiple barriers exist that limit access to necessary healthcare for individuals with developmental disabilities. One significant barrier involves an individual’s ability to tolerate a medical examination. The literature supports effective interventions such as differential reinforcement and desensitization. In order to implement effective intervention, it is critical for behavior analysts to collaborate with medical professionals. In this presentation, interdisciplinary approaches to teach tolerance of medical procedures for a child with ASD will be discussed through a case presentation. The presentation also includes discussion of key components of the strategies to maximize the outcomes for individuals receiving treatment.
