The first day of therapy is a big moment for your child and your family. How that day begins can shape how new routines feel and how easily your child settles into something new. Your child’s Hopebridge care team will be ready to welcome them with open arms. Thanks to insights from families who have walked this path before you—and our 20+ years of experience—we’ve gathered a few simple ways you can help the first feel calm, familiar and fun.
Prioritize good sleep and breakfast
A full night’s rest and a good breakfast help your child feel ready to learn and play.
Start the morning with a steady routine
A predictable routine can help regulate big feelings and make transitions easier. For instance: getting dressed, eating breakfast, reading a book, and sharing a hug before walking to the car.
Build in extra time
For the first day (possibly the first couple of weeks), plan to wake up a little earlier than usual. Extra time leaves room for unexpected delays and helps keep the morning calm and unrushed.
Make a “menu” to spark excitement
Talking through what lunch or snacks will be can help your child feel prepared and even excited about the day ahead.
Choose easy-to-use lunch gear
Depending on your child’s age and abilities, look for lunch boxes and water bottles your child can open independently (depending on their age and skill level). Using the same color or style can help them recognize what belongs to them. It’s also helpful to explain which items will come back home at the end of the day.
Pack the essentials
In your child’s backpack, bring – and label – anything they may need during the day, such as:
Create a cheerful send-off
Pack a lunch with a sweet note, sticker or small drawing inside. A tiny surprise treat can be a comforting reminder that you’re thinking of them during the day.
Share what helps your child feel at ease
Your child’s team would love to know:
Day One isn’t about perfection, it’s the beginning of a brighter tomorrow.
With your home crew and your care team working side by side, your child will be surrounded by familiar comforts and new support, all pointing toward progress.
